Key Civil Rights Legislation & Executive Orders

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

Section 504 applies to any program or activity that receives federal financial assistance. This includes a vast array of entities, such as:

Public schools, colleges, and universities

Hospitals and healthcare providers that accept Medicare or Medicaid

State and local government agencies

Many private organizations that receive federal fund

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin.

Title IX and Sex Discrimination

Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance.

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978

Prohibits sex discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions.

The Equal Pay Act of 1963

Prohibits sex-based wage discrimination between men and women in the same establishment who perform jobs that require substantially equal skill, effort, and responsibility under similar working conditions.

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967

Protects individuals who are 40 years of age or older from employment discrimination based on age.

EEOC Laws, Regulations & Guidance

The EEOC is charged by Congress with enforcing several federal workplace equal employment opportunity laws prohibiting discrimination

Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act - U.S. Department of Labor

Requires federal contractors and subcontractors to take affirmative action to employ and advance in employment disabled veterans and veterans of the Vietnam era.

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance.

Title I and V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990

Title I prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in employment; Title V contains provisions, prohibiting retaliation and compensation for attorney's fees.

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008

Prohibits discrimination in health insurance and employment based on genetic information.

The Civil Rights Act of 1991

Amends portions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to strengthen and improve federal civil rights laws, providing for the right to a jury trial and monetary damages in cases of intentional discrimination.

Sections 501 and 505 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (EEOC)

Section 501 requires federal agencies to take affirmative action in their employment of individuals with disabilities; Section 505 covers attorney's fees and remedies for violations.

League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC)

The oldest and most widely recognized Hispanic civil rights organization in the United States.

Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR)

A leading corporate advocacy organization representing the Hispanic community in the U.S., focused on increasing Hispanic inclusion in Corporate America.

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)

A federal agency responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability, or genetic information.

NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.

America's premier legal organization fighting for racial justice, using litigation, advocacy, and public education to pursue racial justice for all.

Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund

A national non-profit civil rights organization that protects and promotes the civil rights of Latinos in the United States through litigation, advocacy, and education.

Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy to mobilize the nation’s leading lawyers as agents for change in the Civil Rights Movement.

BAMN (By Any Means Necessary)

A national, militant, mass-action civil rights organization dedicated to defending affirmative action and fighting for equality.

American Civil Liberties Union

A non-profit organization dedicated to defending and preserving the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.

JACL is the oldest and largest Asian American civil rights organization in the United States. A community-based civil rights organization that advocates for the rights of Chinese Americans and advances multiracial democracy in the United States.
